What is depression?

Depression can be both a mood state and a clinical diagnosis. Life is full of ups and downs, but what happens when the lows get lower and last longer? Depressive disorders range from mild and temporary changes in mood to major episodes of depression. Sometimes depression is a result of a major life stressor, such as a serious medical condition. In all types of depression, mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing take a hit. Depression is a mood state, but it is also a chemical imbalance in the brain. It messes with your sleep, digestion, energy levels, and your ability to think clearly.
